The Story Behind A Twisted Fate
***WARNING*** There are spoilers. If you don't want to ruin the suspense, stop reading. Now.
As the people who know me know, I started writing A Twisted Fate in eighth grade, in 2014. Back then it was called A Bad Luck Story. That title was scraped before I started ninth grade. Then I started using the title Blood, Sweat, and Tears to account for the three different parts in the book. Under this title I finished the first draft in a raggedy black composition book. It was the very first version of everything. And let me tell ya, Evangeline was hardly as powerful and Eddie wasn't as... nice. Think about that.
When I began transcribing the work onto my, then, small pink laptop I had no intention on ever seeing it published. It wasn't til the end of that year when I decided that I wanted to put into stores. I had also read bits to my mom who definitely encouraged me to take the leap. After that, I rewrote the story three times between then and the end of my junior year. That summer I enlisted the help of one the English teachers at my school, Ms. Mariam Frieden who doubles as a freelance editor. She helped me out tremendously!
I then spent the course of the next year, my senior year, rewriting the story for a final time. And in March of 2018, just before I graduated high school, A Twisted Fate was published on Amazon Prime.
The Inspiration
Two years removed, my obsession with the Twilight Saga was still running high, in 2014. That, along with the newest installment of the Hunger Games Trilogy, Mockingjay Part 1. Isabella Swan and Katniss Everdeen were the two strongest influences on Evangeline Welt's character development. Like Bella I wanted Evangeline to be loyal, loving, caring, and self-less. She was an overall great person to know. And like Katniss who was a leader with a strong moral compass and unpredictable and responsible. The magnificent thing about Katniss is that at 17, she’s (mostly) responsible. Especially with all she had to deal with, and even as she had no confidence in herself.
Also, their influence came in the development of the actual story. The love triangle I developed between Eddie and Angel. While Eddie resembled neither Gale or Jacob, nor Peeta or Edward, I wanted Angel to be almost identical to Peeta. In both physical and emotional appearance. However, unlike the triangles in the first two novels, it was hardly as obvious where Evangeline's heart stood. It wasn't to the VERY END, where Evangeline risked all to retrieve Eddie's ring, did we discover how she felt about him.
Throughout the novel, hints of their influence is sprinkled.
Not only them, the Harry Potter series was a huge influence. Especially towards the end. The story of Harry was not at all like that of Evangeline's. Instead, the inspiration came through the physical writing of the stories. I read all seven of the novels in 6th and 7th grade, while watching the movies to go along with them. One thing at really amazed me was the Warner Brothers went through the entire series. And I'm sure you're thinking, "of course, they did. They wouldn't just stop in the middle of a series." But they do. Sometimes. Especially if sells tanked. But not Harry Potter. Harry Potter survived eight movies with minimal damage. I asked myself why and how. But it was obvious. I re-watched the series a couple days before A Twisted Fate was released and I knew. The story was so well developed, so captivating in every word that it was impossible not to want to know what happened next and that translated into the films. How could it not when the story was so well created? And consistently through all seven novels too.
It was J.K. Rowling who truly inspired me. To want to be great. I aspire to, one day, have my own Harry Potter series.
